Traveling is a break from routine, but it can only be fully appreciated if the mind is at ease. The list should be tailored to your specific requirements. If you’ll need them, bring a swimsuit and workout gear, as well as a suit jacket and dress.

• Make a rough draft of what you think you’ll need, and go through it again and again. Consider carefully what you want to pack in your pocket. Get rid of the “just in case” category entirely.

• The easiest way to cram anything into a single bag is to use every inch of room available. Socks should be packed into shoes, for example. Then, to protect your clothes from dirt, lay your shoes together heel to toe at the bottom of your suitcase in a plastic shopping bag. It’s entirely up to you how you organize your belongings in your suitcase.

Here are a few common approaches:

• Your clothing should be rolled up. This allows you to make the most of your available room while still reducing wrinkles.
• Make use of packing cubes. These smaller bags help you keep your clothes organized and lightweight.
• Make use of the package technique. Wrap each piece of clothing around a central core, starting with underwear and T-shirts in the middle and ending with large tailored pieces like blazers and dresses on the outside.

• Liquids should be kept within easy reach. Toiletries should always be put on top of your suitcase in a clear bag because you never know when the TSA would want to look.

• Never unpack your toiletries: While traveling, it’s a good idea to keep a separate toiletry bag. Having a range of bathroom items ready to go means that you don’t miss something important like a toothbrush or contact lens case the morning of takeoff. When preparing for a journey, keep these things in a small pouch or box in the corner of a cabinet or drawer for quick access. Consider all-in-one choices like BB creams, which combine makeup, moisturizer, and sunblock into one product.
